DKT Recaps CGS Draft Weekend
It was a very big weekend for everyone in the Championship Gaming Series including none other than Brian "DKT" Flander, GM of the defending World Champion Chicago Chimera. Brian had some tough decisions to make with who to protect and who to draft. In this blog report he looks to answer those questions lingering in people's mind and give you his take on why he made the decisions he did.
After being released back into the draft, Matt Stevenson and Pasha Lari were both re-acquired after being drafted in the first and third round respectively. Sandwiched in between was one of our summer replacements, Erik "da bears" Stromberg. The big shock came in the fourth round when Mark Dolven drafted Andrew "anomaly" Brock. As a result, Brian picked up the CGS combine winner, Yfran "Eafra" Garcia. That pick by Dolven was a very tough pill to swallow for everyone in the Chimera franchise as Andrew is a part of the family. After that another surprise came with Brian's final draft pick in the draft.
The reactions from the analysts, ReDeYe, Fatal1ty, Andrew Siciliano and all the people watching the live stream and chatting on IRC said it all when the last pick for Chimera was announced. In a word, it was "WHAT?!?!" The last pick of the draft was Albert "hahN" Hahn formerly of United 5, a player who's name had not been mentioned leading up to the draft. Most everyone was expected Justin "sunman" Summy or Griffin "shaGuar" Benger to hear their name called, but it was not to be. Some fans are shocked, others pissed off. Well Brian has his full blog recap/report from this weekend's Draft/Combine and he hopes to answer the questions burning in many people's minds.
The first day of the combine came like a stampede of Texas cattle and the next thing I knew I was at the SXSW Festival evaluating various players. I already had an idea for the few guys that I wanted and to be honest, unlike last year, nobody in particular really ever caught my eye. I can remember last year there were some various surprises and a few players I had no idea bout really impressed me. This year, definitely not.
I was extremely secretive about the players I was interested in. I was in an extremely unique position compared to the other GMs, and any pick that I valued I definitely did not want to give any attention to them at all. I think I proved that I have an eye for talent last year and I'm almost quite the draft strategist, not to toot my own horn, but the proof is in the pudding.
I came into the draft knowing that I mostly wanted to keep my team the same, but I was however debating a move in Counter-Strike. I knew that many teams were looking at Grt and I also knew that the chances of him going were definitely good. I also knew that I had a decision to make with shaG and that I would save that pick until last, because it would be a serious gut check and it would depend on many situations.
