JetBlk's Angle: What Makes or Breaks a Team?

Posted by: JetBlk

In this day of age there is an abundance of top tier Counter-Strike teams in the scene. Everyday Counter-Strike players try to create a new team in an attempt to become great someday. Role Models so to speak, are looked too in an attempt to mimic what they do in hopes to achieve greatness. These teams such as complexity, NiP, SK, fnatic, and other top teams in the world, are looked upon by the masses that wish to achieve the same greatness. What do they do to achieve success? Lets break it down into several categories with how your team should approach them.

Communication

One of the main basic things a team can do is communicate. Communication is vital to call in back up or let your teammates what you are doing in game so they can back you up accordingly. Communication is to be short and accurate. If it is vague then confusion can occur and it will only hurt you during a round. It is also important to make sure spots on a map have common names among your players. This is to make sure when you call something out to your teammates there isn’t a bunch of questioning what exactly was called. A big thing is over communication. This can lead to excess chat and could cause problems in hearing what is going on in game. Communication can always be improved and worked on in your team to make sure there is no confusion in the message you attempt to get across to the rest of your team.

In Game

There are a lot of things In Game that could make or break a team s play. One this is arguing about what another teammate did in game. If you argue it will bring down confidence in what is going on so it is best to save it for discussion at the end of the game. Now onto the dreaded topic about baiting that we all enjoy talking about. Some tactics use it purposely while sometimes players purposely bait another player to frag. This is a bad thing to do, as it will only anger the other teammate that you have baited. It is best to work together and back each other up in the positions both of you are playing. We have all been baited at one time or another so I think we all know what it feels like and the afterthought of wanting to kick the person in the throat that did it. In game you should also ALWAYS play your position you are assigned. There is nothing worse than letting your position open, having an enemy get through that hole in the tactic, and owning one of your teammates just because you didn’t play your part. Again, I m pretty sure your teammate will want to clobber you for it. Play your position until someone asks for your backup cause then you will have a valid reason that your teammates will automatically accept and there will be no question. Another great thing is making sure a bombsite is totally clear before you plant the bomb. This will help from the bomb man getting picked off while planting by a spot that wasn’t checked.

Practice

It has been said, “Practice makes perfect” but I prefer to say, “Perfect practice makes better play”. I can t tell you how many teams I’ve either been in or seen that have practiced for hours a day, almost every day and have achieved close to nothing. There are many reasons for this being maybe the practice wasn’t taken seriously or the performance was played different than how you practiced. One of the most moronic things I have ever seen is someone who plays different than how they practiced. Why bother practicing something if you are just going to play different from it? For example, don’t be aggressive and push something if you haven’t practiced it with some backup. You will be angry when your face gets shot off when you are staring right into 2-3 enemies. Practice should always be taken seriously. For example, why team kill when you are practicing setups. Again, I can’t tell you how many people I’ve played with that have done this. In personal experience it has just made people want to leave the server and say screw it. Practice should consist of Flash spots, cut off choke points for rotations, positioning, and a timeline of what will happen as the round progresses. Round times are important for making sure things happen at the same time in game if you want them too. Believe me, if a defending team has action at two different bombsites at the same time, they won’t know what to do so your best bet is to get a pick and send the bomb man to the site where you got the pick. Top teams practice often to make sure there is no confusion in the tactic being used.
